V.O.W. SPEC 223 OWNER MANUAL

WARNINGS

1. Failure to follow installation and maintenance instructions detailed in this manual can result in potential for serious injury to the user and damage to the firearm. Since this is a user attached muzzle device, firearms sound suppressors are subject to improper attachment unless the proper procedures outlined in this manual are followed.

2. The Spec 223 suppressor has been designed to operate dry or wet but introduction of "unapproved" substances (water, grease, oil, etc.) can cause dangerous internal pressure with possible injury to the user and damage to the suppressor.

General information

The V.O.W. Spec 223 suppressor was designed for and specifically optimized for .223 or 5.56mm ammunition. Additionally, this suppressor can be used on a firearm that fires .22LR ammunition.

All muzzle attachments, including suppressors, will change barrel harmonics and standing waves. This results in a slight change in point of impact with the device in place. The Spec 223 suppressor will not have any deleterious effects on group size.

This suppressor is effective in markedly reducing the sound of the muzzle blast, making it difficult for an observer to determine the origin of the shot and eliminating the need for shooter hearing protection. There is no way of eliminating the ballistic crack (or sonic boom) of the projective traveling downrange when using high velocity ammunition. When using high velocity ammunition, the dominant sound becomes that of the mechanical noise of the firearm and the porjectile impacting the target.

This suppressor contains on expandable parts and may be cleaned by immersion in suitable solvents and oils. See cleaning instructions.

The real limiting factor on the effectiveness of centerfire rifle suppressors is related to the sound of hte bullet in free flight. The free flight bullet noise is related to the general bullet shape and is also directly proportional to the bullet velocity.

Besides sound suppression, there are other benefits of a sound suppressor which are rarely mentioned. Sound suppressors are exceptionally effective as flash suppressors. This is an important consideration when used in flammable atmospheres.

DANGER

Before performing any installation or maintenance operation, always remove the magazine from the firearm, open the action and visually confirm that the chamber is empty and the firearm is unloaded. Failure to do so can result in potential for serious injury to the user and others in the vicinity.

Suppressor installment/removal

  1. Remove the magazine, open teh action and visually confirm that the firearm is unloaded and the chamber is empty. Lock the slide in the open position.
  2. Inspect threads on barrel and on suppressor for cleanliness. If there is debris, clean off with a brush.
  3. If present, remove the thread protector and thread the suppressor on teh extended thread barrel of the pistol. Tighten hand tight only. Excessive force is NEVER necessary. The suppressor threads bottom on the face of the barrel.
  4. When using the suppressor "wet", place a dollop of gel into the suppressor, place your fingers over the opening and shake to distribute gel.
  5. The suppressor may bcome hot with usage. If the suppressor must be removed when hot, a protective glove should be worn.

CAUTION

If the suppressor is not seated on the face of the barrel, you may experience bullet strikes on the end of the suppressor. Additionally, your grouping may also be affected.

Cleaning

The Spec 223 is constructed of stainless steel and titanium parts. As such, water and water-based solvents must never be used. We have not found the necessity for frequent or compulsive cleaning of this suppressor.

Cleaning can be performed by immersion of the suppressor in cleaning mixture.

The suppressor is drained by standing first on one end and then the other, followed by rinsing with a similar mixture and draining again. Following any attempt at cleaning, the suppressor must be blown out with an air compressor to remove the last remnants of solvent or oils.

Approved gels for wet operations:
Ultrasound gel
Recommended cleaning mixtures:
1/2 Hydrogen peroxide and 1/2 white vinegar OR
3 parts mineral spirits to 1 part automatic transmission fluid
